The grand tour

What’s inside

A friendly tour of SnowyPaw: free reading, topic tags, name-only comments, RSS feeds, and the cozy blogs our invited writers get.

On this page
  1. On your very first visit
  2. Things you won’t notice (on purpose)
  3. The writers’ room
  4. “Can I have a room too?”

Think of this as the little tour we’d give you if you knocked on the door. Wipe your paws, come in, and have a look around. Most of it is for everyone; one room is for invited writers.

On your very first visit

There’s nothing to set up. Pick a post, read it, wander off to another one. That really is the whole routine.

  • Every post, open

Nothing here sits behind a paywall or a sign-up box, and no pop-up will ask for your email halfway through a paragraph.

  • Tags that lead somewhere

See a little #topic tag under a post? Tap it and you’ll get everything any writer here has posted on that subject, newest first.

  • Say something back

Want to thank a writer or ask them a question? A name and your words are all the comment box wants from you.

  • Feeds, the old-fashioned way

Every writer has a feed at /handle/feed.xml, and the whole site has one at /feed.xml. Pop either into your feed reader.

Things you won’t notice (on purpose)

  • Light pages. Our server builds each page as plain HTML and CSS, so there’s very little to download. Even a wobbly café connection copes.
  • Any screen size. Phone, tablet, giant monitor: the layout rearranges itself without you lifting a finger.
  • Accents behave. Vietnamese and other accented text shows up properly, tiny marks like ạ and ữ included.
  • Nobody watching. You won’t find ads, analytics or tracking pixels anywhere on the site.
  • A gate on the comments. A moderator looks at each guest comment before it goes up, which is why the threads stay pleasant.
  • Normal links. Writers can point to their own websites and to the sources they leaned on.

The writers’ room

Writers join when we invite them. Here’s what’s waiting for them once they’re through the door.

  • A blog with your name on it

It lives at /your-handle/ and opens with your latest posts, like a front porch for your writing.

  • A profile with personality

Add a portrait, a few lines about yourself and, if you want, a link to your own website.

  • Shelves you arrange

Make your own categories. Readers flip between them as tabs on your blog.

  • Covers and topic tags

Give each post a cover picture and a few topics, so readers who care about that subject can find it.

  • Built-in contents list

Longer posts get a table of contents, handy for readers who want to skip straight to step four.

  • Pictures that stay put

Images you add to a post are hosted here on the site, right beside your words.

“Can I have a room too?”

Maybe! There’s no sign-up form; every writer here came in through an invitation. If you already have one, head to sign in and start your blog. If you don’t but you’re curious, drop us a line on the contact page under “I’d like to write here” and tell us a bit about what you’d write.
